Article 10 — Scope of Support

When the family stands with you

Bereavement Support

Death of a registered member, spouse, child, parent, parent-in-law or grandparent under direct family care.

Hospitalisation & Serious Illness

Hospital admission, critical conditions, major surgery and long-term treatment.

Disability & Special Needs

Welfare assistance, educational support, advocacy and inclusion in all family programs.

Disaster & Emergency Relief

Fire, floods, accidents, displacement, structural collapse and natural disasters.

Education Hardship

Scholarships, bursaries, mentorship and career-guidance initiatives.

Weddings & Marriage

Family representation, logistical support and welfare contributions approved by EXCO.

Eligibility (Art. 10.4)

  • Be a duly registered DGA member.
  • Have substantially complied with welfare obligations.
  • Contributions at least 90% up to date (unless exempted).
  • Not under active disciplinary suspension.
  • Completed the applicable waiting period.

Humanitarian waivers are always available for genuine and documented hardship — handled with dignity and confidentiality by the Welfare Committee.

Article 10.8 — Welfare Models

How welfare is funded

Model 1

Case-by-Case Contributory

When an event occurs, all active members contribute the prescribed amount via approved channels. Disbursed within 7 days of approval.

Model 2

Annual Welfare Fund

Members pay an annual welfare premium into a pooled fund. EXCO administers and audits it yearly; 20% minimum reserve maintained.

Model 3

Group Last Expense Insurance

Enrolment with a registered insurer (e.g. Britam or Absa/ALAK via Kimisitu Sacco). Highest level of cover, recommended for progressive adoption.

20% of every welfare contribution is retained in the Welfare Reserve Fund. 80% supports the approved welfare case.

Riders may include school-fee relief, childbirth & wedding gifts, sibling cover and fire cash compensation, subject to insurer terms.

How to file a welfare claim

Report within 48 hours · verified by a branch/generation rep · processed within 7 days.

  1. 1. Notify the Welfare Chairperson or Secretary within 48 hours of the event.
  2. 2. Submit supporting documents: ID, death/birth certificates, burial permit, police abstract (accidents) where applicable.
  3. 3. Welfare Committee reviews and approves within 7 days.
  4. 4. Funds disbursed to the registered beneficiary (must be 18+).
