The community of Akobwait, Busia County, celebrates the life and legacy of Mwalimu Henry Akwang'a (1947–2026), affectionately known as Papa. A dedicated educator, devoted Catholic, loving family man, and community leader, he touched countless lives through teaching, mentorship, and faithful service. His values of faith, compassion, and leadership continue to inspire generations.

The people of Akobwait in Busia County, together with the wider educational and Catholic communities, continue to mourn while celebrating the remarkable life of Mwalimu Henry Akwang'a, affectionately known to many as Papa.
A devoted Christian, pioneer educator, loving husband and father, mentor, and champion of community development, Mwalimu Henry rested in the Lord on Sunday, 10th May 2026 at approximately 8:00 p.m., following a stroke.
His final journey home was marked by solemn services held on Friday, 29th May and Saturday, 30th May 2026, bringing together family members, friends, former students, church leaders, and community members to honour a life defined by faith, service, compassion, and unwavering commitment to humanity.
Early Life and Family Background
Mwalimu Henry Akwang'a was born on 30th March 1947 in Atapar Village, Akobwait Sub-location, Busia County. He was the firstborn son of the Late Mzee Desterio Ousuru Inyuka of the Ikaruok Clan and the Late Mama Cornelia Sindani.
As the eldest child, he became a source of guidance, wisdom, and support to his siblings: Michael Ousuru, Theodora Atyang'a, Basil Ijaksa, Anthony Okedi, Vincent Orone, Benard Okapesi, George Inyuka, Jacinta Achudi, Willimina Emoyo, and the late Melda Asogol.
His warmth and generosity extended beyond his immediate family, earning him the love and respect of many relatives and friends whose lives he touched over the years.
A Lifelong Commitment to Education
Mwalimu Henry's passion for education began early in life. He joined Kwang'amor Primary School in 1956 and successfully completed the Kenya African Preliminary Examination (KAPE) in 1967.
He proceeded to St. Paul's Amukura High School, graduating in 1968, and later attained the East African Certificate of Education (EACE) in 1971.
Driven by a desire to shape future generations, he joined the teaching profession as an Untrained Teacher (UT). He served diligently in several schools, including:

Kwang'amor Primary School
Between 1987 and 1991, he pursued professional teacher training at Eregi Teachers Training College as an in-service teacher.
Following his qualification, he continued serving with distinction at Kwang'amor Primary School, Papa Primary School, and Akobwait Primary School until his retirement in 2005.
Throughout his decades of service, Mwalimu Henry nurtured and mentored countless learners, many of whom rose to positions of leadership and influence. Among his former students are:
H.E. Sospeter Ojaamong – Former Governor of Busia County;
Hon. Okiya Omtatah – Senator for Busia County;
Chrisantus Okware – Sub-county Administrator;
Hon. Catherine Omanyo – Former Busia County Woman Representative;
Apostle Peter Manyuru; and
John Osilimong – Former Councillor.
His classroom extended beyond school walls, shaping lives through discipline, wisdom, and encouragement.
A Life Rooted in Faith
Mwalimu Henry was a devoted member of the Catholic Church throughout his life.
He was baptized on 22nd April 1947 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Amukura. He later received the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation on 19th August 1956 and 17th March 1957, respectively.
In 1985, together with his beloved wife Phyllis Musinde, he solemnized their marriage in the Church under the guidance of Rev. Fr. Van Dongen.
His commitment to serving God was evident through the many leadership roles he held, including:
Chairman of Akobwait Sub-Parish;
Parish Choir Chairman;
Pioneer member in establishing Akobwait as an outstation of St. Rose of Lima Parish;
Founder of St. Mary's Small Christian Community (Jumuiya) under St. Michael's Atapar Sub-Parish;
Liturgical Coordinator at Jumuiya, Sub-Parish, and Parish levels; and
Liturgical Coordinator for the Catholic Men's Association (CMA) at both Sub-Parish and Parish levels.
Papa found joy in reading Scripture, sharing the Word of God, counselling young people, and promoting Christian values within the community.
Community Service and Social Transformation
Beyond education and church ministry, Mwalimu Henry actively contributed to community development.
He played an instrumental role in initiatives that led to the establishment of St. John's Akobwait Secondary School and Papa Primary School, institutions that continue to provide educational opportunities to many children.
Known for his humility, wisdom, and peaceful nature, he became a trusted advisor and mediator within the community. His life reflected a genuine commitment to uplifting others and fostering unity.
Family Life and Enduring Legacy
In 1972, Mwalimu Henry married Phyllis Musinde (Mchoi) of the Avashirotsa Clan from Kakamega County.
Together, they built a loving family and were blessed with eight children:

Patricia,
Caroline,
Alice,
Praxedes, and
Wycliffe.
His family grew to include 39 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, all of whom remain living testimonies of his love, guidance, and enduring influence.
He was also a cherished father-in-law to Doris Atieno, the late Celestine Kadogo, Rebecca Etyang', Louis Okodoi Itela, Julius Lengokwai, Aggrey Mongoi Oketch, Mary Ichodo, and Nicholas Barasa.
Final Journey: Order of Events
Friday, 29th May 2026
9:30 a.m. – Arrival at Alupe University Mortuary;
10:00 a.m. – Prayers and viewing of the body;
10:30 a.m. – Departure from the mortuary;
12:00 noon – Arrival at Kwang'amor Catholic Church;
12:15 p.m. – Funeral Mass;
3:15 p.m. – Procession to his home in Akobwait, Atapar Village; and
4:00 p.m. – Night vigil with hymns, prayers, and remembrance.
Saturday, 30th May 2026
7:45 a.m. – Transfer of the body to the main funeral venue;
8:00 a.m. – Opening prayers led by catechists and Jumuiya leaders;
8:15 a.m. – Tributes from family members, clan elders, church groups, friends, colleagues, and community leaders;
12:00 noon – Burial Mass; and
2:00 p.m. – Procession to the graveside followed by interment.

Though he has departed from this earthly life, his values, teachings, and love continue to inspire future generations.
